What shock should I get...

Postby cougarfrog » Thu Jan 12, 2012 7:00 am

Hi
I am trying to fall back in love with my 650, I was going to get a ducati monster but servicing costs are putting me off I could spend more on the 650 to make the ride better.
What shock would be good for me I am 11stone and it is for on the road (3000 miles a year) I am not mechanical so go easy with the explaining.

Any help would be great

Thank you

Cheerio!
How much is 11 stone? 154 pounds?

Penske or Ohlins.
Being in the UK you might want to check Matris or Maxton. I think Ryan Farqhuar runs Maxton.
There's also Haigon. sp?
All are great because all are better than stock.

I personally have an Ohlins with both compression and rebound adjustments. However, once again, anything will be better than stock.
Make sure you get the proper spring for your stones.

Also, you'll have to pay the kitty 6+ Benjamins. (That's 600+ US dollars)

You might want to consider reworking the front fork before doing the rear if you haven't already. Race Tech emulators and springs or another reputable brand parts will do it.

Brilliant, tomorrow I was going to buy a ducati monster and I have backed out in favour of spending a bit on the 650 to make it perfect.
I have not done the front end yet, do I buy springs and the adjustable top or should i just buy new forks?

I will certainly buy a new shock aswell, hopefully these two things should make me love my bike more.

thanks for taking the time to reply.

For ~$1000-1300 you can get the ZX6R front end installed. Forks, clamps, brakes, wheel, clip ons, install. W/a rear shock... great setup...

I can't think of any aftermarket option that would not be better than that cheap POS Kawasaki installed to the swingarm and frame of the 650. This is one purchase where I can't think of any way you could go wrong, even with the least expensive. Make a list of suspension names, paste them randomly to a dartboard, close your eyes and throw. Purchase, install, enjoy, then upgrade the forks a bit if you haven't already. Its hard to do one and then try to live with the other.

It is second hand and they are wanting £185.

You can use any ZX6 or 636 forks.
The 03/04 uses smaller brake rotors than 05 +
To make things easier look for a complete front end.
You can mix and match, but homework is required.
You have to use the 03/04 lower triple clamp.
If using a 05+ upper clamp shims need to be made.

went through the same thing with mine. finished up with a hyperpro shock and fork springs, had the front forks rebuilt and had it all set up for my weight. amazing difference.

on mine. It´s great.

I´m thinking of mounting a bigpiston frontfork from a zx6r year 09,10,11 is it possible ?
