Important Notice-Read Me If You Want To Get Registered

Postby BRP » Fri Feb 06, 2009 6:09 am

I'm now getting an influx of spam bot registrations, and while in the process of
going to an encrypted registration, you will need to e-mail me @
blueridgeperformance@gmail.com to get your account activated.
So to be clear: Register your account, then e-mail me with your screen name.
Thanks :cycle

New members, until
we change the registration set up, which I hope will be done by this weekend.

I admin/built the www.ridefasttrax.com webpage (and soon to come online shopping cart) :) . We don't get spambots. I don't remember when I registered, but do you have on the weird generated letters? This really cuts down fake registrations by alot.

Those are called capcha's, and spambots are getting more sophisticated and can get around most of them. I used to admin a forum and we had a fairly difficult capcha set up but bots still got through.

The best way I've found to deal with the spam is to add a question to the registration process. Usually it's something easy for anyone legitimately trying to sign up for the site, but something spambots couldn't possibly know. An example for this forum could be something like "How many cylinders does the 650r have?", with the correct answer obviously being "Two", "two", or "2". That plus a capcha usually weeds out the vast majority of spam.

I've pretty much been able to tell when it's a bot trying.
Never had much of a problem, until 650.com went down.
I easily got 50 a day when I was registering members over there.

Extra required fields help. On several forums I admin, I created a required field that's name changes daily that's a simple check box they have to click. I labeled it "I am not a bot"

Another favorite is to remove the website field (and maybe a few others) from the sign up process only, then auto ban any registrations that send that information anyway. Regular users can add it once they register.

Moving the registration page to a different url can help too.

I've had more luck with those than the captcha. However, this was with phpbb2. The new one is probably better, but they will still find ways around it.

Something that makes your forum unique from all the other phpbb forums will help prevent automated registrations. However you still get manual spam registrations from time to time.

Not sure if people are not reading this, but I've got a list of several unactivated
accounts, that could be possible spammers.
So if you can't log in, you need yo send me the activation request.

This is still the case. Unless I know you, or your screen name is one that a bot
would not use, you're not getting registered unless you e-mail me.

Since Google decided they needed to change G-Mail:
Instead of getting mail from the same addy in one mail,
I now get one each time someone sends me mail.
The spambots are coming hard and heavy, and filling now filling my inbox.
So I have turned off the automatic e-mail for new registration.
