2009 Ninja 650R Won't Start - Please Help

Postby bigmuse85 » Tue Apr 02, 2013 9:19 am

2009 Ninja 650R Won't Start. 12,000 miles, oil changes every 3000, well maintained. The bike starts for a split second then cuts right back off. I replaced the fuel pump thinking that was what it was, but no dice. Can smell fuel from the exhaust when start attempt is made. Checked all the fuses, they're fine. Battery seems to be fine. Spark plugs were replaced about 1000 miles ago. Air filter was cleaned at same time as spark plugs. Ambient temperature makes no difference, does the same thing in 30 degree as 70 degree weather. Video below, any ideas? Thanks a lot!

You need compression, fuel and spark to run. I'd check spark first.

It runs for a short period of time though. Which should mean spark is fine. Change your fuel filter? Have your bike stored for a while? Bad gas, water in the gas, clogged filter... Try fresh gas, and add some sea foam.

Pull the plugs, they could be fouled.
Then you can check spark.
The symptoms listed could be several things.
it's best to refer to the service manual for troubleshooting.

Plugs were replaced about 1000 miles ago, so they should be fine, but I'll pull them anyways. The fuel filter is built into the fuel pump and is not replaceable by itself, however, I just replaced the fuel pump since I thought that was what it was. Bike has been ridden year-round. Maybe bad gas, but it ran fine with the first 3 gallons or so of the 4 that were in it. I'll add fresh fuel and see. Not sure if it'll ever get to any new fuel though, since it won't even run long enough to clear out whatever is in line already haha. Thanks!

I had something similiar on my daughter's 4 wheeler. There was rust in the tank and the fuel filter got clogged. Enough gas would get by for it to start but it'd only run for a second. Changed filter, cleaned tank and added some seafoam and it cleaned everything out. It was a gravity fed tank with carbs though.

bump starting didn't work. coils and plugs look fine to me. the fuel pump is coming on and pumping fuel properly, it's brand new and the filter is not clogged. starting fluid made no difference. added new fuel, no change. verified all connections and hoses. no failure code is being set in the computer. it starts for a second then cuts back off, so I really think it's a computer issue at this point. I'm going to replace the vehicle down sensor when it comes in. any more suggestions before I give up and take it in to the stealership? couple of images and video update below:
