oil consuption

Postby bikeboy » Mon Jul 21, 2014 10:00 am

07 ninja 650R (60k) mls.
I've been using Amsoil 10-40- motorcycle oll since 4K mls. I always keep the oil level @ the upper line on the oil site glass. a 200+mile ride would require me to top off from the oil lower level. I know there's not much in the sump to start, but where's the oil going. Bike runs perfectly, no blue smoke, and no notable oil seepage? Also, why should I use a premium oil if this is common?

42000+ miles using Castrol 10W-40 no consumption between changes at 3000 miles each time. Oil level between the two lines. Are you shure you are not over filling and bloweing it out the breather into the air filter box. By changing the oil at 3000 miles and the filter I don't worry about premium, I just get any contamination out, if an oil filter clogs up the by pass opens and you don't filter anything.
Using as much oil as you do something is wrong as this is not common.

The benefit to a premium syn, is the OCI is double conventional oils At 3K OCI's I could use 15W40 Rotella or similar.

I am of the old school where I change oil to get the contamination out. Remember synthetic is much thinner and will leak out of the smallest irregularity. Cadillac had to quit putting it in their Northsrtar motor because of the leakage.

Have used Rotella or Chevron equiv. in all my motor cycles for years now. Get it cheap at Costco or sale at Autozone and such stores. Works fine, no excess consumption, engines that have been opened look great. Keep it simple, save money. This guy does have a problem, and it aint the oil used.

Also; If I use aftermarket oil filters; which have the proper pressure relief valve pressure? I'm looking at the I think Fram PH 6017A, or the Puralator PL 16410. Some say I must be the ML series for powersport equipment and shouldn't use the standard car type. what to use?

Please reply.

I use NAPA 1358 over 42000 miles with them and no problems.

Use 15W40 dino in several bikes. Always looking to see which one is on sale at WalMart & local Auto Parts. Also use NAPA, Wix, and Purolator oil filters. Noticed oil consumption with my Vstrom when using full synthetic. Went back to dino 15W40 and no longer have to add oil between changes. No issues using 15W40 in the Ninja 650.
