Throttle play question

Postby MTRider » Mon Mar 02, 2009 10:55 pm

what are you guys opinions on throttle play. i've heard some people like to have almost none while some think its good. the 650 owners manual says it should have some play in it (2 to 3mm i think). mine seems to have almost a 1/4 inch which i think might be almost a safety issue. Is it bad to have no play in it?

No play at all and there's a risk of lost engine braking and a risk of the throttle not shutting down properly when you want it to.

Too much and you need a double jointed wrist, .as well as a likelihood of not fully openingte butterflies.

1 - 2 mm of cable free play at the twist grip works OK. The book settings are there for a reason.

yes, well if you know how to adjust your throttle, and tighten it to a little before the rpms start climbing, it doesnt not reduce engine breaking and has no ill effects on riding.

I know this post died died off around the same time as the dinosaurs but I figured I'd post for anyone that sees this topic. When tightening the play on your throttle, all you have to do to make sure it drops back to closed is to pull it back a bit and let go. If you hear the stopper on the throttle valve shaft *click* against the adjustment screw, you'll be fine

How about how I do it. As little free play as possible and still have it return smoothly with the handlebars is full lock left and right.
