Clutch springs how to

**recomend oil change at the same time**

1) drain oil
2) remove clutch cable from clutch cover (hardest part)
3) take out all bolts on clutch cover
4) turn lever on clutch cover about 90° counter clockwise to release the shaft inside the clutch.

5) take clutch cover off
6) theres 5 bolts as shown in the picture, remove them and the springs are behind them as also shown


7) install new springs, and torque bolts to 87inch pounds


8) clean mating surface and put a new gasket on, put the clutch cover on (make sure the lever is still 90° to the left)
9) put all bolts back in and torque to 87 inch pounds also.
10) put clutch cable back on and adjust as needed
11) put new oil in and ride like the wind

its an amazing change, sucks in traffic unless your hands are extremely strong, but its the best money ive ever spent on the bike. it was such a big change i stalled it a few times the first ride with them in.

Wow! that looks easy.. I might do this.. I thought we had to take the actually clutch plates out.. Now I might do this... I just have to buy a torque wrench.. So whats the new springs feels like? Is more smoother or something??

not smoother just more pressure to improve throttle response and reduce slipping. i would recommend anybody riding a 650 to get these.....from BRP ovcourse

I put mine in this spring,thought I was going to have to replace clutch, tried it with new springs and boy what a difference. Don't have to replace clutch, got them from BRP last fall and thought they would be hard to install, looked at the manual, when I had to change oil i changed them. Took longer to clean old gasket off than anything else. Take the clutch cable out of the handel and the bottom removal is simpler.

both case bolts and spring bolts ar 87 inch pounds. straight from the repair manual :)

I changed mine out with Barnett MT-55-5 clutch springs about two years ago. Well worth the $15!

Thanks for the heads up on this product. This sounds better than trying to install a new exhaust for more HP. So how would you get the cable off (you said it was the hardest part). Secondly, can you describe how much better your throttle response is compared to stock? When I'm in slow moving traffic I'm grateful that I have the 650, and that when I let out the clutch slowly I get moving quickly and smoothly at a decent pace, and then when I give it a little throttle it feels like a rocket ready to take off. With these new clutch springs will the response out of first be even more relentless?

i cant tell you how to take the cable off cuz i man handled mine and now the adjuster looks like shit, maybe someone else has insight on that, but ill tell you the throttle response in first, well if i sit up and go full throttle, the front tire is coming up

Do these make the clutch engage point more predictable since you have a stiffer clutch? I am thinking of picking these up...I have noticed a decent amount of slippage and thought I had the lever adjusted too tightly. Nope...must just be the weak springs.

disconnect the clutch cable at the lever first, then disconnecting the other end should be a breeze...

Yes, you will want a new gasket and your gasket resin.

If you start producing significantly more power than stock, you WILL need these. After the ARATA full system my standard clutch springs couldn't hold the extra power. Be sure you get Gary's special ones. Yes, they are from Barnett but they are custom made for BRP and are stiffer than the ones you can buy straight from Barnett.

hell, i got these when my clutch started slipping a few months back and it gave me about 1500-2000 more miles before i needed to rebuild the clutch altogether. the shitty part was, when i rebuilt the clutch, the original friction plates weren't, or didn't seem to be, worn or show signs of wear. idk

Just by looking at the clutch plates, you can not tell if they are worn.
If the steel plates are discolored{blue}, they are junk, or close to it.
The fibers are most deceiving.But in reality, you need to check the thickness,
and if they are warped on both.

the steel plates looked new, no discoloration or warpage. same with the fibers, they looked good no warpage and the same thickness as new plate. no matter though, the bike runs great right now and i'm not gonna complain that i may have rebuilt the clutch earlier than needed. "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"

Just out of curiosity which size torque wrench or combo of wrenches would be best for both our bikes and say a car.
Ill probably buy from this site after i get the springs and other stuff i need from brp :)
